Girls Shine Academy, Malawi

INTO Giving helped build a brand new all-girls academy, the only secondary school for girls in Mkanada, Malawi

How can you help?

In Mkanda village and the surrounding area in western Malawi there was no chance of continuing your education past primary school if you were a girl. The reason was simple: there was no secondary school for girls. But in 2016 all of that changed.

With a grant of £7,000 (US $10,000), INTO Giving helped build the Girls Shine Academy,a brand new secondary school for 14-18-year-old girls. In its first year of operation, 120 girls joined the school; and plans are underway to double the number of students over the next two years.

In Malawi, girls are often viewed as lower performers in school than boys. Sorrowfully, many girls accede to this view. They are voiceless and often have little, if any, sense of independence or opportunity.

Yet when girls do receive an education, things change for the better -  for girls, as individuals, and for their families, their future families and their communities. For example (and just to start):

  • Each additional year of secondary school education increases a girls' income by 15 -25%
  • Wages, agricultural income and productivity - all critical for reducing poverty - are higher when women receive a better education
  • Reduced risk of HIV/Aids

Girls Shine Academy is a solid, two-room brick schoolhouse, with a wood and iron roof, cement floor, administrative office and outdoor toilets. INTO Giving's support paid for land excavation, bricks and timber, widows and roofing.
